The Journey Everyone Can Relate To...
My name is Shelby. I am a 30 year old young woman who struggles with weight management. All my life, I have been over weight. In fact, I joke that I came out of the womb over 100lbs and that I am naturally "big boned". FUN FACT- did you know that some people can have "bigger" bones, but while larger bones might account for a few extra pounds, it is not going to be the difference between a healthy body mass index (BMI) and being overweight. It is just a silly saying.
Lucky for me, I stand SUPER tall at 4'11 so i have my height going for me. Just kidding! :) I am short and "big boned" and it has taken me 30 years to be okay with that. See, we all have been dealt certain traits that make us who we are. At the end of the day, we only have ONE body so we must learn to love it! I honestly feel like once you truly love yourself, that is when you can start making the physical, mental, and emotional changes you need to be your best self!
Since May 2021, I have been training with Nikki at Empowered Fitness. Nikki is my 4th trainer I have worked with. Yup, the 4th. When I tell you I have tried every trainer, gym, diet plan, diet pill- I am not lying. My weight has fluctuated 50lbs for YEARS! I remember one time someone asked me if i could recall a time when I wasn't over weight. As mentioned above, I honestly couldn't. I feel like I was born over weight.
When I met with Nikki that Spring day- something felt different. I knew in my gut that she was going to help me reach my goals in more ways than one. I went home that day bragging to my family that this woman I met with was going to train me, counsel me with my nutrition, allow me to teach my Zumba class at her facility, and show me the beginner ropes of running a business. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE NIKKI?!?!? For the first time ever, not only was I going to the lose weight, which is a challenge in itself, but I was going to keep it off and FINALLY be the best version of myself- Strong, fit, healthy, and happy!!!!
In order to achieve everything you want, you must START somewhere. As embarrassing as it is to admit it, the picture on the left is me in May 2021 at 232lbs- The heaviest I have ever been in my whole life. The picture on the right is me in Aug. 2021 at 222lbs- 10lbs lighter. As you can see, there is still a LONG ways to go, BUT there is PROGRESS!!! I have learned that taking a "Before" photo is an important step in the journey. If you are like me, nothing makes you feel worse about yourself then seeing a picture of it. However, it is just the beginning. Try to look on the bright side, your body will never look like that again, so take the photo and use it as motivation.
Why share this? Why put myself and my journey out there for the world to see? I am doing this because it is important to me to show others that we ALL struggle with weight loss, body image, and living a healthy lifestyle. You are NOT alone!!
I struggle every single day with multiple aspects surrounding this topic so I figured sharing my struggles will not only be therapeutic for me, but will help others! Even if I help one person with my story, then it was worth sharing. So stay tuned for more stories, struggles, discussions, progression, motivation, updates, advise, and more as I share my journey to a healthy life with you!
With All My Love,
